Pablo’s says thank you for making a difference

by Natalie Webb natalie.webb@meltontimes.co.uk

CHRISTMAS has come early for all the horses and ponies at Pablo’s Horse Sanctuary thanks to the kindness of Melton Times readers. Our Advent appeal has at Pablo’s generated £800 in cheques for the charity and a staggering£700 was raised at the Victorian Christmas Fayre. A further £60 was raised at a car boot sale and £120 at a quiz night at The Crown pub in Burton Street. The money has gone a long way to supporting the sanctuary and has allowed owner Carole Fielding to secure enough hay to get her horses through until the new year.

Carole said: “There are so many people to thank for their wonderful support this Christmas. We were down to the bare bones financially but thanks to the heartfelt generosity of the Melton public we have pulled through. “So many people have put in requests to sponsor our horses and ponies as Christmas presents and I have been utterly overwhelmed by the number of new volunteers who have come forward. I couldn’t do anything without the help of the wonderful volunteers at Pablo’s so a very big thank you goes to all of them.”

One of the new volunteers is Kirsty Hughes (24), who has Asperger’s Syndrome which affects her ability to communicate with others. Kirsty, who currently lives at home, has enjoyed her time so much it has given her the confidence to embark on a degree in Environmental Conservation and Countryside Management at Nottingham Trent University in the new year, and to live independently. She said: “Working with the horses at Pablo’s makes me feel incredible, it makes me feel lighter inside, I get such a sense of accomplishment helping out.”

Another new volunteer is Janet Irving (40), who travels from Uppingham every Wednesday to help out at the sanctuary, bringing her nine month old baby daughter Evie with her. She said: “I muck out the stables with my baby sling on, it doesn’t look particularly glamorous but I always have such a great time being around the horses.”
