Hope you’ve all been able to enjoy the glorious weather that we’ve had over the past month, our walkers on our Sponsored Dog Walk event certainly did! As October has come, it means half-term will soon be upon us. This year, for the first time, we are holding a Pony Day on Friday 24th October.
This will be for boys and girls, aged between 7 years to 12 years – no previous experience needed. The day will start at 10.30am until 1.30pm. Refreshments will be provided but children would need to bring their own packed lunch. The day starts with an introduction to Pablos, then meeting some of the ponies that they will be working with.
The children will be divided into groups depending on age and experience. In the morning there are hands on activities selected from the following, again depending on age and experience.
- Principles and safe handling
- Tour of stables, learning about the types and colours of horses.
- Identification of parts of the pony
- Putting on a headcollar
- Tying up
- Leading a pony
- We aim to give reasons for the way things are done
Lunch will be in the barn, sitting on bales. In the afternoon there are games and quizzes related to what was learned in the morning, with rosettes for the children to win.
Requirements: Packed lunch, long trousers, stout shoes or wellies. Other outdoor clothing, sunscreen, according to the weather.
The price is only £15 and to book a place, or for more information, please Julia Webster on 0776 6664 222 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Sunday 5th October, our third fundraising event of the 5km Sponsored Walk / Dog Walk took place at Crown & Plough in Long Clawson, near Melton Mowbray.
The day started as a chilly, but bright and sunny morning. Our lovely walkers and their four-legged friend arrived for their registration at the Crown and Plough, we discovered two of our walkers had come in fancy dress as the Red Devils!
Walkers and dogs all set off at ten minutes past midday, firstly along Mill Lane into the countryside, when the sun came out to make it perfect weather for the walk. They went over the brook and into the recreation ground and back into the village. As they headed up to the dairy, the sun was really shinning and everyone started to remove their layers down to their t-shirts – in October!!
The walk continued through a pretty sun-dappled wooded area at the back of the dairy (a bit of welcomed shade) and back into the village, past the Church and along Church Lane back to the Crown & Plough pub. Of course, when they entered Barkers field they just had to stop for a group photo!!
After the walk, all walkers and their dogs had a well-earned drink at the pub (been rude not to – wink) and volunteer Gerry Bell brought along his amazing fruit birthday cake and shared it with everyone…… very tasty. Also all the super dogs that took part got a wonderful doggie bag to take home. A fantastic time was had by everyone.
We would like to give a big thank you to everyone for their support in making the Sponsored Dog Walk such a success, and for the generous donations received from RandR Country, Mole, Pets at Home (Leicester )and the Mars Foundation for the doggie bag contents, to Sue Grogan for organising the event, and a special thank you to Jo at the Crown & Plough Pub in Long Clawson for her hospitality, warm welcome, great coffee and for serving excellent cold beer! Also a special thank you to Sue Ruscillo who challenged Gerry Bell to wear fancy dress, and for joining him for support…this caused quite a stir as they walked through the village and the challenge raised an extra £80!
Participants raised an amazing £733 for Pablo’s Horse Sanctuary. We would like to give a HUGE thank you to the following who participated in the Sponsored Walk / Dog Walk (dog names are in italics):
Susan Grogan and Benji; Dawn Webb and Rosie; Rosie Paine and Maddy; Christine Bell and Sam; Jade Townsend and Martie; Teresa Sykes and Skittles / Barney; Jess Crawford and Jack; Hillary, Sue Ruscillo and Gerry Bell (Red Devils)
