Hope you all had a great bank holiday weekend! As regular readers will know, 2014 saw our third Open Day on Sunday 24th August and what a fantastic day was had! The day started with the volunteers arriving very early to start on the yard duties and setting up of all the stalls, ready for the gates to be open at 12.00 noon.
A small crowd of visitors started to arrive and the main gate was opened early at 11.30am. All visitors were met with a warm welcome. On the yard there were stalls to browse; bric-a-brac, , how to sponsor a horse, our merchandise stall where Pablo’s embroidered polo shirts, fleeces and t-shirts and cards were on sale, and delicious home-grown apples and plums on offer. There was a tombola with 100 prizes to win, games and jigsaws, and the amazing raffle with the chance of winning a Cross-Country Driving Day with Landrover at Eastnor Castle for 4 people with lunch included. The total prize valued at £1300! The winning tickets were drawn on the day and congratulations to all the lucky winners . Also there was a drinks stall and stall selling delicious home-made cakes made by our volunteers.
Throughout the afternoon were demonstrations by master farrier Bob Black-Wood being assisted by our Lottie. There were also clairvoyants, including palm reading and angel card reading. Volunteer Russ kept everyone entertained play his guitar and on vocals.
An auction was held for a painting of Icarus, which was kindly donated by artist Rachel Whitehead, which raised a fantastic £100, and also a horse scanning company raffled off a free scan to a lucky winner.
A big thank you to PeeWee toilet hire who donated the portable loos for the day, The Defence Animal Centre for loan of their tables, and also Swithland Water for donating the water cooler and bottles of water.
Over £1.5k was raised on the day which will all go towards the care of the horses and ponies. A huge thank you to ALL our super volunteers for giving their time, their energy and their skills to make the day so enjoyable. We could not have done it without you. And also to everyone who came and supported the day to make it such a success. We hope you enjoyed being a part of it all, as much as we did having you along for the afternoon.
We would like to give a huge thank you to the MARS team, the Red Shift Pouches, for all their recent work on the yard. A fantastic fence was built, dividing one large field into two fields and hardcore stone was put in one of the field shelters in the manège ready for the winter months. Also MARS donated all the materials as well as providing the labour to us.
A big thank you goes to everyone who has supported Pablos recently, to name but a few, including Hallmark Consumer Services for holding a raffle which raised £300, Owston Lodge Equestrian Centre for holding a fundraising stall, to some lovely ladies for holding a plant sale, Ally Daly and Katie-May Campbell for their donation, and Ken and Ann our long-standing car booters.
Shaun Carroll, Equine Dentist very kindly came to the yard and donated his time by undertaking dentistry work on some of our ponies teeth and we would like to give a special thank you to Shaun for his help.
Last month we took on 2 ponies which had been abandoned on a trading estate and were being abused on a daily basis by a group of young thugs. A very kind lady saved the ponies and Pablos took them in. We are so pleased to report that our volunteer Wendy (who used to run the New and nearly new equine stall) has given them a foster home together at her new home. Wendy reports that they have settled in really well, and despite all that they have been through, are very friendly, loving ponies and the smaller one is so inquisitive. We all wish them the very best for their future and that these ponies have now got the home that they truly deserve.
Also we have our annual Sponsored Dog Walk “Waggin and Walkin” on Sunday 5th October at The Rose and Crown Pub in Long Clawson, for a gentle 5km walk around Long Clawson and is suitable for all ages and abilities (dogs and owners alike). We would love for you to take part, all you need to do is email Sue at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0116 2532064.
