Hope you all had a great bank holiday weekend! As regular readers will know, after last year’s successful Open Day, we decided to hold an Open Day this year on Sunday 25th August and what a fantastic day was had! The day started with the volunteers arriving very early to start on the yard duties and setting up of all the stalls, ready for the earlier start this year at 11.00am.
A small crowd of visitors started to arrive and the main gate was opened at 11.00am. All visitors were met with a warm welcome and were given an information pack containing a Pablo’s information leaflet, a newsletter, recycling bags and a sponsored dog walk form (Saturday 12th October). On the yard there were stalls to browse; bric-a-brac, New and Nearly New Equine stall, how to sponsor a horse, our merchandise stall where t-shirts, polo-shirts, sweat-shirts, and cards were on sale. There was softball darts game and children’s lucky dip and a raffle with the most amazing prizes to be won. Also there was a drinks stall and stall selling delicious home-made cakes made by our volunteers, including a stall of “Chocolate Heaven.
Visitors had a chance to guess the name of our new “horse” (seen here with 2 visitors), which was announced as “Jester” – well done to the winner.
Throughout the afternoon there were painted horse demonstrations by Rebecca Bishop Bsc Hons Equine Sports Therapy EEBW, being assisted by Bumblebee, on the horses anatomy and skeletal structure. Also Suzie Trelawney, Equine Dentist was there answering question on equine dentistry. Unfortunately, Dr Ray Smith was not able to be there on the day, but Spiritual Medium and Psychic Bob Perris volunteered his time and performed reading, and donated his fee to Pablos.
And finally, Dolly (who at 48 years old, one of our OAPs) who put in a special appearance, circulating on the yard.
A big thank you to Joan, Anne, Ruthie, and Paul Hubbard of PeeWee toilet hire who donated the portable loo for the day, and also Swithland Water for donating the water cooler and bottles of water.A fantastic £1046 was raised on the day which will all go towards the care of the horses and ponies. A huge thank you to ALL our super volunteers for giving their time, their energy and their skills to make the day so enjoyable. We could not have done it without you. And to everyone who came and supported the day to make it such a success. We hope you enjoyed being a part of it all, as much as we did having you along for the afternoon.
Next week the New and Nearly New Equine stall will be at Sutton Bonington Riding club on Sunday 1st September, weather permitting. Following on the Equine stall will be at Hose Vintage weekend, Canal Farm, Hose on Saturday 7th September. If anyone has any spare /outgrown riding kit to donate, please could you contact Wendy, due to the success of the stall we really need more stock.
Have a good week.
