Open Day

Hi Everyone

All the horses and ponies are well and have been enjoying the sunny breaks in the wet weather this week. We are all so excited and pleased to announce that Pablo’s is going to hold an Open Day on Sunday 26th August 2012. Plans are now underway and more details will follow – so please hold the date in your diary and we would love to see you all there!

On Saturday 30th June there is a Charity Football and Family Fun Day at Hamilton Tennis Club, in Melton Mowbray which is being held to raise funds for “Alternative” (a crisis pregnancy and baby loss service), Cancer Research and Pablo’s Horse Sanctuary. We would like to thank the organisers for their support and wish them all the best for the day. Please see poster for more details.

Becky with her new rug on the Equine stall

Our volunteer Wendy took Pablo’s New and Nearly-new equine stall to Riverside Riding Center on Saturday which raised £50, a huge thank you to Rebecca and all of her liveries and customers for supporting Pablos.  It was great that the weather had finally allowed the show to go ahead, (as regular readers know 4 shows were cancelled due to wet weather which resulted in a loss of 100s pounds to Pablos) and Wendy was able to hold the equine stall to raise much needed funds. Wendy will be at Soar Valley Riding Club next Sunday 8th July (weather permitting!!) and has some great equine items on offer.

Our volunteers, Chris and Sue held a stall on Melton Market on Saturday which raised nearly £100. This will be spent on materials for urgent maintenance work that is needed on the yard, and also for the planned improvements that will need to be completed over the Summer period. All work is to benefit the horses and ponies environment, and if there is anybody out there who could kindly donate any building materials, such a breeze-blocks, builders sand, pea-shingle, hardcore – the list goes on, it would REALLY be appreciated. If you are able to offer any help, please could you contact Carole. Many thanks.

Icarus (The Great)

Also this week, a thank you to volunteer Alex who is going around all the paddocks, on all the sites, with the strimmer to keep the weeds down and tidy the fields. Unfortunately, the trusty old strimmer is getting bit weary now and was wondering if anyone out there could donate a strimmer, or know of one for a small price? Please could you contact Carole.

A big thank you to the customers of Lifestyle Gym in Melton Mowbray for raising £21 in their collection tin. Our volunteer, John will be holding a fundraising stall at Cotgrave Festival of Sports next Saturday 30th June, so if you are at the Festival, please pop over and say hello and see if you can win some great prizes.

Have a great week.

Beautiful May

May in the sunshine

Hi Everyone

All the horses and ponies are well this week. However we are very sad to report the passing over of our beloved Shire, May, who peacefully  passed away in the night, a few weeks ago.  May came to Pablos approximately 5 years ago and was in her late 20s.  She was a true gentle giant and was a firm favourite amongst the volunteers.  She was always so gentle, so soft and with such a kind manner about her, it was a pleasure to have cared for May in her last years. She was a very special mare and loved spending time with her field companions, Westie, Bussie and the late-Silver.  May came to us with her daughter Bonnie (who sadly passed away after a serious bone infection) and we believe that May and Bonnie are reunited again in horsey-heaven.  God bless you May, you will be missed.

As regular readers may know, our volunteer Wendy was due at the  at Sutton Bonington Show on Sunday 17th June, to be held off the Gotham Road, near East Leake, however due to the weather this show was cancelled.  Unfortunately, due to a total of four shows being cancelled, this has resulted in a loss of around an estimated £400.  As you know, every penny counts at Pablos and this loss has been quite a blow to the Sanctuary, we have all got our fingers crossed for Riverside Riding Centre on Saturday 23rd June, so that Wendy can hold Pablos new and nearly-new stall and raised some much needed funds.

Penny and Icarus

Thank you to volunteer John for holding a car boot sale on Sunday which raised £30.

It’s Newsletter time!   For those of you who sponsor a horse or pony, or kindly give a gift each month on the Standing Order Scheme, our quarterly newsletter, Pablos Pony Express, will be sent to you over the next couple of weeks, so to start looking out of the postman!   If you would like to help by sponsoring a horse or pony, or can give a donation on a regular basis you can download the forms on the “How you can help” section.  All help and support is extremely appreciated.

We would like to share this lovely poem with you, which was written by our volunteer John:

A Pony’s Prayer

A kindly voice, a gentle hand
A nice warm place where I can stand
New shoes for my feet are such a treat
But a soft warm rug would make it complete
A bale of hay, a carrot or two
or maybe even a polo to chew?
A friend for a frolic and field of grass
is this really too much to ask?
Pablos does this for me and so much more
They need your help, but they are very poor
So please could you give a pound or maybe two?
and a pony’s prayer will be always be
“God bless you”

Lilly and Arian in their new paddock

Hi everyone

All the horses and ponies are well, and after a week of more wet weather it was nice to see a bit of sunshine on Sunday.

It was a big day on Sunday for Arian and Lilly, as our fantastic Fix-It team finished fencing their new small paddock (complete with field shelter) ready for them both.   After walking over to her new paddock with Arian, with a little skip Lilly felt grass beneath her feet for the first time.  As for Arian, well she just put her head down and grazed, whilst Lilly played around her.  We are so pleased that Lilly is such a confident little filly, very inquisitive and takes everything in her stride.

Arian and Lilly

Two of the residents at the yard in Long Clawson, Freeway and Jiffy have gone on their summer holidays.   Both were transported there on Saturday for their summer grazing in a field in Melton Mowbray, and have settled in and are now in holiday-mode. They will be returned to the yard later in the year to take up their Winter accommodation for a few months.  Both Freeway and Jiffy have big personalities and are missed by the volunteers (the yard seems a bit quieter now), but it is good to know that they are enjoying themselves in beautiful surroundings.

One of our long-standing volunteers, Ruth and her husband Cliff, will be celebrating their 25th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday 14th July.  Ruth and Cliff would like to invite all volunteers at Pablo’s Horse Sanctuary to join them at the Melton Conservative Club on the Saturday 14th July at 7.30pm, for a fantastic night with entertainment from Bakers Treat.  A raffle is to be held on the night in aid of Pablo’s with some super prizes on offer.  Congratulations to Ruth and Cliff and thank you  for all your continued support.

Cherry with volunteers Sam and Lou

We would like to thank all the fantastic  residents of Severn Hill Close in Melton Mowbray, who held a street party for the Jubilee Celebrations in aid of Pablo’s.  A raffle was also held and £81 was raised.  You’re all stars.

Our volunteer, Wendy was due to hold Pablo’s New and Nearly New Equine Stall at  the re-scheduled Soar Valley Riding Club show on Sunday, but unfortunately this was cancelled due to the weather yet again!  The next planned stall will be at Sutton Bonington Show on Sunday 17th June, to be held off the Gotham Road , near East Leake.  We have had some great equine equipment donated recently, so do pop over and have a look and see if you can get yourself a bargain.

If you would like to help the horses and ponies at Pablo’s, we are always looking for people to hold car boot sales on our behalf.  If you are able to give your time, we could supply you with good quality items to sell, that have kindly been donated.  Please contact Carole if you are able to help.

Bea Bea and King

Thank you this week to our super car booters, Ken and Ann Johnston who raised £53 and to Sally Renner for her kind donation of £30.

Have a good week.

Jubilee Weekend

Little Jerry, Ginger and Christina Scarlet all watching Lilly

Hi Everyone

All the horses and ponies are well. Unfortunately the wet weather is back with us, however we thought it would be nicer this week to show more photos of the horses and ponies that were taken recently in the lovely sunny weather!

We are very pleased to announce that a fantastic foster home has been found for Murphy! Regular readers may remember that in April, we saw the return of Murphy, who was rehomed as a companion horse last year. Sadly the horse that Murphy was being a companion to had to be put to sleep due to health problems, and the owner was not able to offer a home to Murphy any longer. Murphy is a 16.2hh grey gelding, who is approx 14 years old and can not be ridden, however he is such a well-mannered, sociable and gentle horse, who had been very much loved. Murphy lived with Shanty and Bella in their paddock until last week when he moved to his new foster home with a lovely lady called Sue in Hungerton. Sue reports that Murphy has settled in extremely well. We wish Sue and Murphy a very happy life together.

We are also pleased to report that last Thursday, Freddie was safely gelded. This means that both Freddie and Frankie are able to be moved from the yard at Long Clawson to be with our volunteer Andrea for their progression. Andrea has been making regular visits to spend time with the two ponies, so that this will ease their transition to their new accommodation.

Relaxing in the sun (last weekend!)

Over the Jubilee weekend our volunteer, Wendy planned to bring Pablo’s New and Nearly New Equine Stall to Soar Valley Riding Club Jubilee Show in Quorn on Sunday 3rd June, and at Canaan Farm Equestrian Centre Jubilee Show in Costock on Monday 4th June. Unfortunately, due to the wet weather, both shows have been cancelled. However, Wendy will be at Soar Valley Riding Club on Sunday 10th June, Sutton Bonington Riding Club Show nr East Leake (new venue) on Sunday 17th June and at Riverside Riding Centre on Saturday 23rd June. All weatther permitting of course!

A date for your diary is Saturday 29th September 2012, for a fantastic tribute music night with Adelle and Lady Ga Ga!! Mick who is the landlord at the Genny B in Melton Mowbray, and Paul H from Melton Mowbray have very kindly got together and organised this amazing fundraising night to raise funds just for Pablo’s Horse Sanctuary. Tickets will be £10 with more details to follow.

We would like to give a huge thank you to all of the following stars for their kind donations to help the horses and ponies: Mr Burke for a cheque for £15, Fiona who works at Salford Hall asked for donations instead of birthday presents which raised £50, our long-standing supporter Graham from Global Safety for his donation of £335 and Mrs Gardener from Wymondham for donating good quality items that can be sold at a car boot sale.

Also, this week, a huge thank you to Louise from Bingham who took her trailer to collect 25 bales of hay from Burton Lazars and delivered it to the yard in Long Clawson. The 25 bales of hay were generously donated by Lilla. Also the collection tin on the counter at The Long Clawson Shop raised £20.25. You’re all stars.

On behalf of all the volunteers, we would like to congratulate the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee.

Have a good bank holiday and week.
